Domaine Mucyn is an estate we have followed for a few years. Our quest to find a domain that can offer a few commune/terroir wines and punch above its weight has often drawn blanks and false starts, but with the Mucyn famaily we have found what we are looking for. Jean-Pierre, his wife Helene and the extended family farm 14 hectares of vineyards and are undergoing the process of conversion to organic viticulture, although in essence they do this by nature. Additions to the wine-making process have always been minimal, with the tried and tested methodology of ‘making wine in the vineyard’ being the watchword here. The vines are located between Ozon in the north and Pont D’Isere, the southern part of the ‘Chassis’., with the Domaine being located in the just south of Gervans on the eastern bank of the Rhone.
The cellar and house is an 18th century travellers lodge located a few hundred metres from the Rhone and was once used by boatmen as they worked their way along the river. The granite walled stables have been converted to house the cellar providing the perfect atmosphere for fermentation and elevage. New oak, heavy extraction and bought in yeasts are eschewed for more gentle and natural raising of the wine, and the results of this lightness of touch can be seen in all the cuvees.
Gamsy is a blend of Syrah from the Drome, grown on alluvial soil, whilst the Gamay if fro 290 metres, granite soil located in St Joseph. The grapes are de-stemmed but not crushed and cuvaison is just 11 days. Pumping over is used sparingly over the course of fermentation and the wine is then finished in traditional tanks. The result is a delicious, open-faced and juicy red, redolent of both violet and red fruit, with a cool mineral palate.
Entrecouer (this is the process of thining the secondary shoots in the lae spring), is the name for the red Crozes Hermitage is made up of several parcels, of which 90% are on the Haut Chassis and on glacial alluvial soil, with a small parcel from the Larnage principally of decomposed granite. The fruit is de-stemmed but not crushed and cuvaison lasts for 25 days and is finished in traditional tank ( no oak). The result is s fresh, pure finessed wine of just 13% that acts as a portal to the vineyards themselves.
