Pedro Marques draws his inspiration from the classic wine regions of Central Europe. He has always been captivated by the subtlety and restrained minerality of these wines, and the idea of ensuring the personality of a vineyard is expressed in the glass. Nothing added, nothing taken away. At home in Lisbon, he is the fourth-generation in a winemaking family, he owns 13 hectares of vineyards in the DOC Torres Vedras. His main planting are white grapes – predominantly Portuguese locals Arinto and Fernão Pires plus a little Alvarinho, Gouveio, Viosinho and Antão Vaz.

He has three sites for red grapes: a co-planting of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz; a site with 80+ year old Castelão; and a small parcel of Syrah. The soils are mostly Kimmeridgian clay, similar to those found in Chablis, with high proportion of ocean fossils elevating the calcium carbonate content. His vineyards are just 9km inland, with fresh Atlantic breezes to bathe the vineyards, further enhancing the saline element in the wines and tempering the warmth of the region. He has been certified organic since 2015 and follows a “lazy” approach to winemaking, his only addition being a touch of SO2.
