Frick is a name synonymous with biodynamics and zero sulphur wines but ruminating on the complexities and intricacies of the winemaking and farming can sometimes miss the immediacy of the juice. Because bloody hell they’re tasty. The Frick vineyards and winery are in Alsace, eastern France, roughly equidistant between Strasbourg and Basel.

And the 12 generation estate really is at the forefront of the natural wine movement. They were early adopters of organic farming (1970), biodynamics (1981) and zero sulphur (1999) and their convictions run through the core of everything they do and the language around their practices and beliefs can sound quasi religious:

'La vision à court terme, les gains de temps, d’argent et de confort régissent le «développement» agricole. Gagner du temps, mais à quel prix?...Pour préserver la Terre et ses micro-organismes, il ne faut pas consacrer moins, mais plus de temps et de travail!’ ("The short-term view, the savings in time, money and of ease govern agricultural “development”. Save time, but at what cost?...To preserve the Earth and its microorganisms, we must not spend less, but more time and energy!)

'En cave, nous ne fabriquons pas, nous élevons des vins authentiques, sains et vivants.' (In the cellar, we do not manufacture, but we make authentic, healthy and living wines).

So what’s the deal with the Pinot Gris Maceration? It’s Pinot Gris (same as Pinot Grigio but don’t let that put you off) which is actually a slightly pinkish hue which comes through when you allow a period of skin contact like here with 7 days on skins. This skin contact allows the grape juice to take on some of the polyphenols normally left behind in the skins of the grapes to give the wine more colour and, importantly, texture and aromatics. The grapes come from a marl-limestone vineyards (think clay-like chalk) which helps the wine maintain acidity and keep a sense of freshness. In a region such as Alsace, where overripeness can be a problem, this is a godsend.

What does this all mean for the wine? It’s serious stuff. It has a feeling almost of black Early Grey tea with fresh lemon and a vibrant raspberries. But it’s also juicy and approachable. Quite simply, its beautiful.
