IGP Pella "Xi-Ro" Ktima Ligas 2018
GRAPE: XINOMAVRO & RODITIS
THE WINEMAKER: KTIMA LIGAS
Xi-Ro is a blend of two Greek grape varieties, Roditis and Xinomavro, made by sister and brother Meli and Jason Ligas in the region of Pella in the Peloponnese northern Greece. Roditis, a white grape bringing freshness to the blend and the red Xinomavro a deeper unctuous lick.
Meli and Jason’s father Thomas began his quest to get to know the local Pella ecosystem intimately in 1985, looking into traditional methods of winemaking in an attempt to find ways to accentuate the distinctive qualities of the region and its distinct grape varieties. Many grape varieties fell from favour after the phylloxera plague in the 19th century which nearly wiped out vine growing across Europe, and so in many ways Ktima Ligas is trying to resurrect these old varieties and farming methods. They now use Roditis, Assyrtiko and Kydonitsa for the white wines, and Xinomavro and Limniona for the reds. The reds are pretty rare and only made in good years but are also wines to be savoured.
Presently Meli and Jason follow the ‘Fukuoka’ philosophy originating in Japan in the early 20th century, a hands-off more natural approach to winemaking to great effect. The wines now not only express the variety they also truly represent a regional identity.
