Winemaker
Johannes and Christoph Thörle continue their family's work at Saulheim. They farm organically, giving close attention to the differences between the estate's vineyard sites.
Wine
Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir. Cherry and violet, with fine tannin and a gently savoury finish. The wine has enough fruit to feel generous, while retaining the fresh line expected of Pinot. Open a little ahead of dinner with duck, mushrooms or a simple roast.
Origin
Rheinhessen's limestone and marl give the Saulheim vineyards a distinct geological setting. The comparatively sheltered climate supports ripe Pinot Noir. Cooler nights and differences in exposure help preserve fragrance and acidity alongside that ripeness.
