THE WINEMAKER: MAS D`ALEZON
Catherine Roque has made her mark in the region when she planted the extraordinary vineyards at Clovallon, now looked after by her daughter Alex, in the dolomitic limestone north of the AoC.
After she handed over the reins to Alix, she could focus on her 5 hectares in Faugeres, which she amassed in 199. These cover three different styles of schistous Faugeres terroir: Montfelette is the highest altitude vineyard in the region at 350 metres and is made up of blue schist and planted to Syrah, Mouvedre and Grenache; Presbytere is cinsault dominant, and planted on a lighter red slate soil producing a light-footed and delicious thirst quenching style of wine,; and Cabretta which is planted to Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and sits in a little ‘col’ above the village of Faugeres. Ferments are made in the village in old oak and eggs for the whites, and raised in oak and concrete The resulting wines are detailed and perfectly ‘pixeled’ examples of this much underrated terroir.
