AbstractBerry, herbal, balsamic
Mallorca's Callet and Fogoneu bring a distinctive savoury character to a generous red, settled in large and used oak.

Winemaker
A winemaker and a musician, four million pesetas, and a first harvest fermented in a milk cooling tank. This is how 4 Kilos began.

Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero started their project in 2006. Francesc had helped revive interest in Callet, one of Mallorca’s native grapes, through his work at Ànima Negra. Sergio co-founded Barcelona’s Sónar festival. Together they brought a clear conviction: the island had something distinctive to say through its wines.

Today they work from a converted sheep farm near Felanitx. The beginnings were modest; their attention to the vineyards is anything but. Organic farming, native vegetation between the vines, and an interest in finding the right grape for each piece of ground. This care results in wines with a recognisable sense of home.

Wine
Mediterranean warmth, with freshness and vibrancy to keep you coming back for another glass.

The 2023 brings together local Fogoneu and Callet with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe and tart red and dark berries, a little spice, dried herbs and a gently balsamic aroma. There is a fine tannic grip, giving shape to the fruit - synonymous with Fogoneu and Callet.

Eight months in large oak foudres and used French barrels enable the wine to settle and come together - any oaky character stays kept and checked in the background as a supporting role.

If you enjoy a juicy red but want something savoury and a little less familiar, this is a good place to start. A short spell in the fridge, pour with grilled lamb, roasted aubergine or a spread of charcuterie, and let it open as dinner unfolds.

Origin
Across Mallorca, iron-rich clay loam known as call vermell sit alongside deep clay-limestone rifts. 4 Kilos source fruit from vineyards in both the north and south of the island, bringing different sites into the blend.

Long, dry summers make water precious. Native ground cover crops help manage the balance and supports life beneath the vines - connecting these wines to the landscape around them.
