AbstractBerry, spicy, supple
Costeplane's house red brings Syrah, Carignan and Merlot together from its biodynamic Cévennes vineyards.
Winemaker
Mas de Costeplane lies between the Mediterranean and the Cévennes, on a clay-limestone plateau at Cannes-et-Clairan. Organic certification dates to 1989, followed by Demeter biodynamic certification in 2011.
Loïc Manchec works with the owners' daughter Françoise. The vineyards include old Carignan planted in 1958, alongside Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and white varieties. Natural yeasts are used in the cellar, with both blends and single-variety wines in the range.
Wine
Syrah, Merlot and Carignan form the blend in Lou Canoun Rouge.
Red berries and a little spice, with a supple, juicy palate. The wine has enough savoury detail to work with food without losing its easy appeal.
Origin
Cannes-et-Clairan sits on Costeplane's clay-limestone plateau in the Gard. Mediterranean heat develops ripe red fruit, but night air descending from the Cévennes slows the pace.
