AbstractCherry, silky, fresh
A defiant celebration of Cahors’ old local grapes, expressed through delicate fruit and supple tannins.
Winemaker
Fabien Jouves gives Malbec a lighter touch. His wines retain the inky depth of Cahors, with fragrant fruit and finely handled tannins. Five years in Bordeaux helped him develop that feel for texture.
At Mas del Périé, on the high slopes of Trespoux-Rassiels, he farms biodynamically and vinifies parcels separately, drawing out the nuances of their clay and limestone geology. His playful vins de soif bring another side of his character into the cellar: unusual grapes, outspoken labels and wines made for sharing.
Wine
Fabien’s pointed response to Cahors’ exclusion of historic local grapes. He created the wine to champion varieties such as Jurançon Noir and Valdiguié, whose place in the region he felt the appellation had overlooked. The name leaves little doubt about his feelings.
The 2024 brings these grapes together with Malbec and Gibert. Cherry fruit, silky texture and lively freshness, with a delicacy that belies the label. Seven days of whole-bunch fermentation and six months in concrete keep the tannins gentle and the fruit immediate. Serve slightly cool with charcuterie and a table of friends.
Origin
From several clay-limestone parcels, with vines averaging around 50 years old. Made at Trespoux-Rassiels and bottled as Vin de France, it draws on the older grape varieties of the Cahors region.
Jurançon Noir, Gibert and Valdiguié share the blend with Malbec. Their presence gives this wine a different accent from Fabien’s pure Malbec bottlings.
